International disaster relief charity ShelterBox is launching a new initiative to engage with young people in Cornwall. The Helston-based charity will be contacting schools throughout the county to organise visits to talk to teachers and pupils about their work giving emergency shelter to those affected by disaster.
“We are building on
the success of our schools project which has been running for a few years now,”
says Emma Nicholls, Young ShelterBox project manager. “We want to take the
programme a stage further. ‘Young ShelterBox’ is about reaching out to more of
the younger generation in Cornwall and to get them to engage with what we do”.
ShelterBox is
providing a wealth of cross-curricular materials that are specifically designed
for use in the classroom. “We want to help young people understand about how
disasters happen and what impact they have on those individuals and communities
involved,” adds Emma. “This new initiative will challenge children to perceive
something beyond their own lives giving them a unique and immediate opportunity
to get involved and contribute positively.”
ShelterBox is working
with Azook, the Penryn-based education experts, to develop a ShelterBox focused
teaching resource that would be included in Azook’s ‘Sense of Place’ online
library of teaching materials available to schools.
ShelterBox is now
running a big ‘Young ShelterBox’ awareness campaign amongst schools in Cornwall.
“We are contacting schools before they break up this year to offer an assembly
talk in the autumn term. We have such wonderful feedback from those schools we
visit. The children really take ShelterBox to their hearts,” says Emma.
